Youth Project Receives Recognition from Labour Leader
Ed Miliband officially opens the Shakers project in Askern.
Leader of the Labour Party, Ed Miliband, has officially opened The Shakers project youth centre in Askern, which aims to give teenagers a safe place to learn and spend time with friends.
The Shakers project, supported by many local partners including Tunstall Healthcare, is a fantastic resource which offers an outlet for teenagers in Doncaster to relax, meet and learn.
Whether it is to train to be a DJ, cooking classes, play pool or just unwind, it is a fantastic facility that was the brainchild of the local youth of the Askern area, which secured funding from North Doncaster Rural Trust.
The centre is open three nights a week and has been developed by the kids themselves.
Harvey Field, North Doncaster rural trust chair "We are delighted that local businesses are interested in keeping such a worthwhile project open. It's proved its worth by having less anti-social behaviour and giving local kids something to do and is a good news story to counteract the usual bad press youngsters seem to get today. We'd like to expand its use for all age groups for perhaps local art classes and bridge, but the funding situation is looking quite difficult."
The décor of the building is styled with a retro 50's/60's theme, including a modern replica of a Wurlitzer, bubble style jukebox with music from the 1950s to the present day, plus neon lights and appropriate decorations and seating.
The building is fully accessible and includes a bar and kitchen that will sell milkshakes, the idea behind naming it the ‘Shakers' project, smoothies and speciality coffees. Background music from the juke box will also be played, with social and games areas and meeting/training facilities.
The building is a genuine community building that will be used by all members of the community when not being used for its main purpose as a youth centre.
Alison Rogan, Tunstall's Communications Director said: "It's a pleasure to be involved with such a great project, and we sincerely hope the children enjoy spending time here. It really is a fantastic facility where kids can have fun and learn new things, giving them a safe place to go in their spare time."
