Government announces first ever National Dementia Strategy

Commenting on the announcement of the Government's first ever National Dementia Strategy, James Buckley, CEO of Tunstall said:

"The Department of Health's first ever National Dementia Strategy - “Living Well with Dementia” - reinforces the fact that dementia is a national priority. The Government's commitment to improving awareness of dementia and ensuring the condition is diagnosed at an early stage is to be applauded, as timely intervention can play a crucial role in helping to improve quality of life.

"The early prescription of telecare ensures people with dementia are able to live more independent lives, successfully managing the risks associated with the condition to remain safe and well within the familiarity of the home environment. This is recognised in the strategy, which has multiple references to telecare and a dedicated objective. It  also encourages commissioners to be watchful of current and emerging telecare evidence in order to provide options to prolong independent living and delay reliance on more intensive services.

“A key focus of the strategy is also to ensure a higher quality of care, and the need to develop a range of services for people with dementia and their carers, in order to fully meet their evolving needs over time.  Local authorities across the country are already using telecare to help achieve this, enabling people with dementia to remain independent for longer, receiving the care and support they need in their own homes.  Prescribing telecare at an early stage also provides invaluable support for families and carers, offering reassurance and helping to alleviate some of the emotional and psychological impact dementia can have on those affected by the condition."
