Yorkshire MP Alec Shelbrooke visits Tunstall to see telecare in action

Tunstall welcomed Alec Shelbrooke, Member of Parliament for Elmet & Rothwell to its Response Centre near Doncaster and Headquarters near Selby, to learn more about how the dedicated team takes calls from a very wide range of people, supporting them 24 hours a day, every day.

The support is very diverse - anything from a serious emergency, such as a possible heart attack or fire, to everyday questions such as when the carer is due or a problem with heating.

Alec said:

My visit to Tunstall really opened my eyes to how using technology such as telecare or telehealth, can enable people to have an independent life despite living with a variety of health or care needs. The support the telecare team gives has the potential to keep people out of hospital or other care environments for a lot longer.

Ali Rogan, External Affairs Director at Tunstall added:

It always surprises me how powerful the impact of a visit to our Response Centre has on people. In fact it’s quite humbling to think about the amount of people we are providing reassurance to – indeed we receive around 5,000 calls per day.

During the visit, Alec also joined a Dementia Friends session. A keen supporter of dementia, Alec secured an Adjournment debate in the House of Commons earlier in the year, calling for improvements of Dementia care services in the UK. The session was an excellent opportunity for the group to share their experiences and learn from each other.
