Leeds and Partners visit Barcelona

Delegates from Leeds visited Tunstall Televida’s offices in Barcelona on the 19th November to find out how technology enabled care services (TECS), also known as telecare, are being used to support people living with long term conditions across Spain.

Tunstall Televida, part of Tunstall Healthcare Group, is the main provider of TECS in Spain, currently supporting more than 245,000 users. Following a welcome reception by the mayoral commissioner for Elderly People in Barcelona, Assumpcio Roset, representatives including Tim Straughan, Director of Health and Innovation for Leeds and Partners, were given an insight into Barcelona’s approach to supporting people to live independently.

The service offered by Barcelona Provincial Council in partnership with Tunstall Televida provides a proactive care system integrating services, based on the use of new communication technologies, which includes personal medication reminders, information about nutrition, social and health issues, as well as intervention in cases of extreme temperature and natural disasters.

While at Tunstall Televida, attendees were given an insight into the structure of the Spanish Telecare system, which adopts a much more preventive care approach than other European countries, due to its programme of outbound calls to enquire about the well-being of the user and to make them feel included in society, allowing greater proactive support for individuals. In addition to better quality of life, the system also reduces visits to doctors and pharmacies and the costs on the health and social care infrastructures.

Presentations were also given to outline the current care model and services being offered, specifically as a method of managing long term conditions and tackling loneliness among older people, along with efforts to encourage integration across different service areas.

During the visit, delegates were able to see the service in action as they completed a tour of the telecare monitoring centre. Commenting on operations at Tunstall Televida, Tim Straughan said: “I was very impressed by the quality and management of Barcelona’s telecare service offering, and the proactive rather than reactive nature of telecare service. Our visit to Tunstall’s Televida offices provided a great opportunity to learn about the Spanish telecare model and discuss EU strategy in the context of Horizon 2020. We were also able to exchange perspectives on health and social care integration, which proved educational for all parties.

“All the delegates were well received and we’d like to thank Tunstall Televida and Barcelona City Council for their warm welcome.”

The visit to Tunstall’s Televida offices coincided with Leeds Council and Leeds and Partners’ participation in this year’s Smart City Expo, which took place in Barcelona on November 18th-20th. Tunstall UK also attended the event, in partnership with Leeds, to showcase its extensive range of technology enabled care services.
